Signed Near the Kettle

The Guest Book

Selected remarks from the people who lingered long enough to sign after one more glass of something.

At the Front Desk

Every reputable inn keeps a record.

Ours is maintained with excellent intentions. The handwriting varies, especially when someone decides the dinner record needs correcting.

Recently Signed

"We only meant to stop by."

Four hours later, the coats had never made it past the chair. By then, somebody was making a serious case for the respectful treatment of leftovers.

Management considers this a successful visit.

Guest Remark

"Coffee arrived before the question."

This is often mistaken for a compliment. In practice, coffee tends to return when the room has settled into a good story.

Security Note

"Entry was loud but fair."

Gravy held the party at the door for review. After several findings were announced, the visitors were approved.

Management Reply

"No one is late until they have actually left."

The Brass Kettle recognizes the long goodbye as a cherished local custom. Shoes may be on, but the kitchen still has business with you.

House Compliment

"The bar shelf has opinions."

Every bottle seems to arrive with a backstory. The recommended glass is discussed first; the claim about "only a splash" comes later.

Lost Property

"Several socks, no certainty."

Items left behind are stored with care. Eventually someone claims them, or the household develops a theory about who escaped without checking properly.
